When I was a child, red meat was demonized. Everyone knew that eating well meant eating chicken — lots of chicken. “Heart healthy” cookbooks cropped up everywhere, each one full of the same advice. Of course, these days, science has shown us that the original lipid hypothesis — the idea that eating saturated fat and cholesterol leads to heart disease — is simply false.
American Academy of Pediatrics Finally Takes A Stand
Plastics may not be safe. BPA should be avoided, but is in most convenience foods. Artificial food colors can create ADHD like symptoms. Too many nitrates can interfere with the body’s hormone production and possibly even lead to cancer. Last month, the American Academy of Pediatrics finally took a stand against these and other additives, issuing a report in the August 2018 issue of Pediatrics citing numerous studies on the dangers of these chemicals and recommending that they be removed from the products and foods that children use and consume.
Does Saturated Fat Cause Heart Disease?
To put it as simply as possible: no. There is absolutely NO EVIDENCE linking dietary intake of saturated fats with incidence of heart disease!

Why I Started Taking Krill Oil with Astaxanthin
Have you heard of astaxanthin? It’s what makes wild salmon red. It’s also the most powerful antioxidant on the planet — 550 times more potent than vitamin E. Krill oil with astaxanthin is a superfood. And unlike other seafood based superfoods which are of questionable sustainability (I’m looking at you, cod liver oil), krill oil can be one of the most sustainably harvested seafoods in the world.
Why Choose the Continuous Brew Method of Making Kombucha Tea?
One of the first posts I ever shared on Food Renegade was a batch method of brewing flavored kombucha called the double fermentation method. It was the only method I’d ever really known about. Eventually, I heard about alternative brewing methods, including the continuous brew method. So, I asked Hannah Crum of Kombucha Kamp to tell us all about it. What follows is an interview with Hannah.
How To End Your Coffee Addiction
I’ve been a coffee addict since I was a teenager. And I’m not alone. Every morning, most Americans go straight for the coffee as soon as they are able to drag themselves out of bed. Last year, I managed to stop my addiction to coffee dead in its tracks.

Kombucha SCOBY Experiment
Want to know which way of growing a kombucha scoby is best? Can you successfully grow a scoby from store bought kombucha? I experimented with three kombucha scoby cultures — fresh, dehydrated, and store-bought — to find out!
Your Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Is Fake
Did you know that the Mob makes money hand over fist by selling you fake olive oil? According to Tom Mueller, an intrepid journalist who wrote a scandalously revealing book on the subject, 70% of the extra virgin olive oil sold is adulterated — cut with cheaper oils. Apparently, the mob’s been at it so long, that even most so-called “experts” can’t tell a real olive oil from a fake olive oil based on taste alone.
