Researchers have finally found conclusive proof that the balance of bacteria in your gut may have more to do with your mood than any other contributing factor. Do you struggle with anxiety? Irritability? Depression? How about your friends or children? If yes, then this recently published study done by researchers at McMaster University may provide one of the keys to unlock mental clarity and wellness.
How to Heal a Sunburn In Less Than 24 Hours
If you want to know how to heal a sunburn in just under 24 hours, I’ve got a trick for you. All it takes is two simple, real foods. In fact, because of this trick, I rarely even admit to having a sunburn. In my family, we now call it turning pink. That’s because our skin never peels, and instead our sunburns fade to nice tans.
Is Your Cinnamon Real?
A lot of folks have made a hubbub about whether or not your cinnamon is real. Their claim is that Ceylon cinnamon is the only true cinnamon, and that Cassia (or Saigon) cinnamon is fake. They are missing the point. The truth is, both belong the same family of plants (and even the same genus — cinnamomum). And both are similar although the taste is somewhat different. That said, I do believe there’s such a thing as fake cinnamon, and it can impact not only your measure of culinary delight, but also your health.
How To Choose A Good Coconut Oil
It’s no secret that I am a fan of coconut oil. But how do you pick the best, most healthy coconut oil? How do you know whether to get a refined or unrefined oil? What do all those labels like “virgin,” “extra-virgin,” and “expeller-pressed” mean? What’s the difference between the cheap coconut oil I see on my grocery store shelf and the high-quality oil I can buy online?
Does Sunscreen Protect You From Skin Cancer?
Did you know that sunscreen is often ineffective in preventing melanoma, and can often indirectly be the cause of cancer? Not only that, but getting the right kind of sun exposure can arguably prevent skin cancer!
Harvesting Basil 101
Harvesting basil, biting into tiny sun gold tomatoes, feeling my skin warm under the bright sun, drinking iced tea: these are the things I think of when I think of summer’s bounty. Next to cilantro, basil is my favorite herb.
The Link Between Roundup Ready GMOs and Disease
In a recent paper published in the journal Entropy, Dr. Stephanie Seneff and Anthony Samsel argue that the key ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, contributes to most of the diseases associated with a Western diet — everything from gastrointestinal disorders to mood swings, heart disease to diabetes. Monsanto has long argued that glyphosate is perfectly safe for humans. That’s because glyphosate works by disrupting the shikimate pathway in a plant’s metabolism. Human metabolism does not have the shikamate pathway, so we are safe. But are we?
Buttery Patty Pan Squash With Basil Recipe
Patty pan squash recipes aren’t nearly as numerous as zucchini recipes. But to me, summer isn’t summer without fresh patty pan squash (…and tomatoes, and zucchini, and onions, and lemonade).
Patty pans go by many names. Depending on where you’re from, you might call them sunburst squash, scallop squash, button squash, or white squash. I call them patty pans. It’s much more fun that way.
This simple patty pan squash recipe takes minutes to prepare and tastes like summer thanks to the abundance of fresh basil. (And yes, where I live, it is summer already, and will be for at least the next 4 months!)
Are Mason Jar Ferments Safe?
Recently, the internet has been in a tizzy over whether or not mason jar ferments are truly safe. Perhaps you’ve read other bloggers struggling with the issue. Or, maybe this post is the first you’ve heard about it. Or maybe you’re one of the few who’s wondering why I’m even talking about fermentation at all, let alone something called mason jar ferments.
Hybrid Seeds vs. GMOs
Hybrid Seeds. Genetically-modified (GMO) seeds. Heirloom seeds. The labels often confuse people. Not a single day passes without some well-meaning reader leaving a comment like this one: “GMOs are perfectly safe. Farmers and gardeners have been cross-breeding seeds like this for thousands of years. Take off your tinfoil hats, people!”
Um… no. Just no.
Farmers and gardeners have NOT been cross-breeding seeds like this for thousands of years. What those well-intentioned readers fail to understand is the fundamental difference between hybrid seeds and GMOs.
