Fans of grilled cheese sandwiches will swoon. Kids will be dancing across front lawns in celebration. Your taste buds will party like it’s 1999. The lion will lie down with the lamb. (Okay, so that last is a bit of stretch. But you get the idea.) This Apple Bacon Swiss Grilled Cheese Sandwich is heavenly. Glorious. Surprisingly worthy of praise.

Forgive my enthusiasm. I love simple, easy food. I also love unique combinations of flavors that rock my world. I also love food that my kids and husband rave about. This buttery sampling of grilled cheese excellence does all this and more.

The Players

For each sandwich, you’ll need:

The How-To

Assemble your sandwich by layering the apple, bacon, and swiss cheese between your two slices of bread. Butter the outside of your bread liberally.

Grill over medium heat in a cast iron skillet until the cheese melts, flipping the sandwich about halfway through the cooking time to get both sides toasty and golden. Or, cook using your favorite method for grilled cheese. (We use our George Foreman Grill.)

ENJOY!

I’ve also tried it with pear and like the subtle difference that gave it, too. Experimenting is fun!

Do you have a recipe for your soaked sourdough English muffins that you could share? I am trying to gather some soaked or sprouted sourdough recipes. Thank you so much!

OMG – Sourdough? OK, the Universe is rearranging itself for me now. I LOVE Sourdough and didn’t think I could find a healthier version of it. I did a search on it in your site but didn’t see any recipes. Am I looking in the wrong place? Please point me in the right direction for soaked or sprouted Sourdough recipes.

To make sourdough with a sprouted grain is relatively easy. You just find a good whole grain sourdough recipe and replace the flour with sprouted grain flour.

I recommend Whole Grain Breads by Peter Reinhart as a great source for recipes and information about working with sourdough and whole grains.

Huh! I had never thought to put in apple. I’ll have to try it. We do thin tomato slices. We love grilled cheese with tomato soup. Sometimes we make the grilled cheese sandwiches using left over French toast. Delicious.
