These tiny, triangular shaped glands sit on top of your kidneys and are responsible for creating and releasing hormones for helping you cope with stress (most notably cortisol and adrenaline). When you’re stressed, your adrenals release adrenaline (also known as epinephrine). The adrenaline increases your heart rate, contracts blood vessels, and dilates air passage ways to quicken your fight-or-flight response.
Announcing a Real Food Nutrition & Health Course
In the world of homeschooling, the options for Nutrition & Health curricula are down right scary. Everything out there teaches the USDA Food Pyramid’s fear of fats and love of grains. Everything. Never mind that the grains are refined, extruded, denatured constructs of modern engineering. Never mind that the meats come from an inhumane, unsustainable, and unhealthy industrial food supply. Never mind that the dairy is all pasteurized, fortified, and full of antibiotics and pus.
If you’re trying to teach your kids to love Real Food (food that is traditional, old, sustainably and ethically grown or raised, etc.), you won’t find a textbook to support your view. If you’re trying to teach your kids to love saturated fats like butter, coconut oil, and tallow, you won’t find a curriculum that even comes close.
So, for the past six months, I’ve been writing a book just for you. It’s written at a high school level, and covers the same basic topics that are covered in a high school Nutrition & Health course. Only there’s a difference. I’m on your side.
WINNER plus $59.95 off COUPON
It’s always good to announce a winner. I feel like the bearer of such joy. It’s like Christmas.
But another part of me is always a bit disappointed for all the people who didn’t win. That’s why I’m so thankful when a sponsor chooses to end a giveaway with a generous coupon. A good coupon is sort of like winning, too. Isn’t it?
Anyhow, Marilyn at Urban Homemaker has graciously decided to offer you $59.95 off ANY drinking water system in her store! So, that goes for the Aqua Dome as well as the other Multi-Pure systems she sells.
GIVEAWAY: Aqua Dome Water Purifier ($225 value!)
Despite the studies released year after year demonstrating just how dangerous, toxic, and unhealthy our tap water can be, we still keep using it. After all, it’s federally-regulated. Surely that must mean it’s safe? Surely if our local tap water were unsafe, someone in authority would have told us about it? Sadly, no. Last month,…
Re-Cultivating Our Sense of Taste
I remember when Hot Pockets made me salivate. And ranch flavored Pringles potato chips. They don’t anymore.
If you’re at all like me, you grew up eating the standard American diet. In her own small way, your mom probably tried to make “healthy” food choices. In my home, that looked like skim milk, low-fat salad dressings, and chicken — lots of chicken. But we still ate sandwiches starring American cheese and soybean oil mayonnaise, still poured corn syrup over our white-flour pancakes, and drank just about as much Coke as our hearts desired.
Making the transition into eating according to more traditional food ways required not only a perspective altering change in what is and is not considered healthy food, but it also required re-training my taste buds so that the good food actually tasted good — so that it made me salivate.
It’s the Junk Food Commercials
Remember all those studies that show a direct correlation between the number of hours kids watch TV and their weight? The conclusions of these studies all warn that too much television leads to an all too sedentary life, which leads to obesity.
Well. Today a study was released which concluded that it’s not the hours of TV, but the number of junk food commercials! Oh, those savvy junk food marketers. Did you know that by the time a child is 5 years old, they have seen an average of more than 4,000 television commercials for food annually? During Saturday morning cartoons, children see an average of one food ad every five minutes! And up to 95 percent of those ads are for junk foods.
Is the tide turning in favor of saturated fat?
Sadly, it’s dangerous to think outside the box. Particularly in the scientific community. If you harbor a view that’s contrary to the whole (even in light of good, sound, scientific evidence), you are demonized, belittled, and shunned.
That’s why when one of the world’s most prominent lipid researchers did an (ahem!) honest review of the observational studies linking dietary intake of saturated fat to heart disease, I take notice. If he can get away with being honest, then surely the tide in scientific thinking must be turning!
Vitamin D Creates Lower Risk Pregnancies
I sing the praises of vitamin D. You know that. So here’s one more reason to love vitamin D: It can greatly reduce risks associated with pregnancy.
Babies born with sufficient vitamin D blood levels are less likely to be premature, suffer from respiratory problems, and be considered “small” for their dates, get colds, or experience eczema. Expectant mothers with sufficient vitamin D blood levels are 30% less likely to suffer from diabetes, high-blood pressure, and pre-eclampsia.
The sad part is that most expectant mothers (at least here in the U.S) don’t have sufficient levels of vitamin D.
Pregnancy Cravings Make No Sense
I am pregnant with my third child. This ought to be news to most of you, and it explains at least part of why I’ve been posting so infrequently of late. It’s my first trimester, and (as usual for this phase of pregnancy) I’ve had very little extra energy. Parenting two kids, meeting my work obligations, and celebrating the holidays has worn me out.
But one thing has surprised me this go around: pregnancy cravings. It’s a common theme among pregnant women, but one I’ve never really shared in. My pregnancies have never been marked by strong aversions to smells or beloved foods, and I’ve never had to fight wanting to eat something that I knew to be downright unhealthy.
But this time is different.
GAPS Starter Kit Winner
I owe you all an apology. Somehow in the midst of what has been a very chaotic life recently, I failed to post the winner of the GAPS Starter Kit giveaway. I selected the winner ages ago via Random.org, but completely neglected to pass on the news to you. Recently Nicole from GAPSdiet.com contacted me…
