If you’re a cheese lover like me and a fan of authentic, real food made from farm fresh ingredients, then you probably know just how difficult it is to find affordable cheese from grass-fed cows. Finding cheese from grass-fed cows that has also been made from raw milk? Close to impossible.
Some of us are lucky enough to live near raw milk dairies that also make cheese. Others are lucky enough to live near artisan cheese makers that are proud to source their raw milk from authentically pastured cows.

Am I just crazy or does that picture look completely unnatural? Seriously, that is a digitally enhanced photo-shopped picture.
I thought the same thing – those cows were shopped into that lovely pastoral scene.
I agree! They look like the cows have been cropped from another photo and placed on the background. The lighting in it just off! I looked to the comments to see if anyone else thought the same thing.
Hmm, curious indeed. We just sent an e-mail to the original photographer to get the skinny on the photo. Looking back on one of his other shots we use, it appears we have inconsistent shadows on a cheese display next to a cow:

You can actually see the picture in this post on the cheese labels in the picture linked above, so my guess is the farmer’s photographer did the labels and sent us the label picture along with the other herd shots we have.
The pic at the top of the post came from Kane’s table, and a few from the site came from mine… though I probably should’ve photoshopped some of the clutter out of my dining room. : P
However it shakes out, I’m sure it wasn’t the Amish farmer himself, though I’m happy to report that he’s considering an e-mail address so we don’t have to phone orders in any more. ; )
So would you guys prefer I use a different pic? I’ve got another good shot taken in the Spring instead of the Fall at a different time of day, and that may lend more credibility to the farmer.

@Amanda Yes! I also noticed the photo is totally Photoshopped! Lol! Was going to sign up until I saw that, now I don’t trust them.
Which photo are you talking about? The only thing I did to the pics was to adjust the levels of the colors (something I do for every pic I post) to help the image be sharper and less hazy.
The cows appear photo-shopped onto the background – adjusting the levels wouldn’t really make that more or less apparent to me.
Well, considering all I did was take the raw photo data and adjust the color levels, I don’t know what else to say. The cows aren’t pasted onto the background. They’re really there, in the grass, eating it.

Permethrin? Really? Was I the only one who picked up this? They said no chemicals and then listed a chemical that they use!!!
Exactly!! I’ve been scrolling the comments to see if anyone else noticed this! Permethrin is a neurotoxin! It is extremely absorbable through the skin. Not sure I want that regularly soaking into the skin of the cows I’m getting my milk/cheese from! I had to laugh when I went to their website anyway. I am one of those people lucky enough to have lots of sources of raw milk and cheese and other dairy products here in Lancaster, PA. I live only about a 1/2 hour from this place and have seen their products around in stores here. I have another place I currently get 5lb blocks of raw, grass-fed cheese from for only $20-$25 so I think I’ll pass on this give away. Even if the price was right and I didn’t live in Lancaster Co I would definitely pass on Permethrin dairy though!!
Actually, there are numerous studies that show that permethrin is not easily absorbed through the skin, but is rather absorbed through the gut and pulmonary membrane. So, eating it and inhaling can be dangerous both to the animal and anyone consuming the animal’s milk, but topical treatments are considered safe and even ethical (particularly if it helps keep animals pest-free and comfortable!).
While permethrin is synthetic (meaning created in laboratories by combining the various components of the naturally occurring compound), it was originally made by home gardeners as extract from the pyrethrins present in chrysanthemums. It is still considered organic if used at low concentrations, and is totally permissible under USDA Certified Organic standards.
While that’s not necessarily always the best guide for what’s healthy or not, I think of it like Aspirin. The chemical aspirin is composed of used to be entirely derived from willow bark, and is now entirely synthesized in laboratories. Yet that doesn’t prompt us to say that it’s artificial, or fake. It’s just us making an identical, yet more concentrated compound in a laboratory to what occurs in nature. And while I might prefer to drink willow bark tea when I get a headache, that doesn’t mean that I’ll withhold aspirin from people who are in legitimate pain and could really use it. In the same way, when garlic oil isn’t enough to keep cows comfortable, I’m not opposed to a low-dose permethrin being applied topically to keep them happy. There’s a reason why its use is allowed in organic standards.
And while I agree that it’s ideal to go “beyond organic,” I’m also not going to fault a farmer for wanting to keep his cows safe, comfortable, and drug-free even if it means he occasionally has to resort to an organic pesticide like permethrin to do it.
Let’s remember all the things he’s doing RIGHT: He’s keeping his cows on pasture. He’s feeding them only grass or hay. He’s ensuring that they’re not given antibiotics, growth-promotants, hormones, etc. He’s collecting clean, pure raw milk and turning it into delicious raw milk cheeses. And if he uses garlic oil first and an organic pesticide like permethrin as the last-ditch “big guns” (a much safer “big guns” option than most out there, I might add), to help contribute to his cows overall health, then that’s his prerogative. Ultimately, he has to behave in a way that keeps his conscience clean, his integrity in tact, and the food he produces as healthy as possible.
One of my key mottoes is to not let the good be the enemy of the ideal. Let’s try to remember that and not diss a farmer going above and beyond what most farmer’s are doing.
Also, if you’re taking offense at the “no chemicals” juxtaposed to the permethrin, then that may be my fault for quoting out of context! The full context on their website states: “We mineralize our soils with organic fertilizers to produce nutrient dense foods. No chemicals are used!…” So, the “no chemicals are used” part most likely refers to how their grass is raised.

I was disappointed that you had to sign up for the cheese society by using Facebook. I absolutely hate Facebook, so I will forego the opportunity to win.
I just found your site today from a Google search for agave nectar. I am so glad I found your article. A friend told me I could use it instead of sugar, but it sounds like it is worse! I have gout and have just begun the South Beach Diet and am trying to avoid refined sugar, so I was looking for a good, natural substitute.
I will definitely sign up for your newsletter and come back to read all the articles you have on this site.
I just looked again and verified that you don’t have to sign up using Facebook. There are instructions on the sign up page for signing up without Facebook. Perhaps take a closer look at the page?
