Last week, Bob Comis from Stonybrook Farm contributed a piece to the Ethicurean on why he thinks prices for meat raised on small, local farms is too high. The next day, I read Joel Salatin’s annual newsletter to his on farm customers. Then I sent Joel an email, asking him to do a guest post for me expanding on what he wrote. This is Joel’s take on why local food is more expensive:

Is Eating Well An Act of Civil Disobedience?
These days, YES. Until the 1950s, all food was local and organic. Let that sink in. Think about it the next time someone accuses you of being an “elitist” because of your food choices. These days, if we want to eat sustainably produced food that’s humanely raised and traditionally prepared, we’re food renegades.
In many places, we’re even outlaws.
Weekly Meal Plan
This week we got an abundance of veggies in our CSA share, including the first tomatoes of the season. (Did I tell you we got strawberries last week?) Needless to say, the tomatoes are already gone. But the greens remain: kale, bok choy, swiss chard, spinach, dandelion.
Rocket Fuel Found In Baby Formula
No, this isn’t a belated (and distasteful) April Fool’s joke. It’s the truth. A recent study by the U.S. Centers For Disease Control discovered a chemical used in rocket fuel in several different brands of powdered infant formula.
It’s called perchlorate, and it’s turned up in the drinking water supplies of several cities, particularly those near defense and aerospace sites.

Check Out These Tasty Morsels
I don’t know about you, but I always look forward to those moments after my children have gone to bed. The house gets quiet. My habit of turning off all but the most necessary lights means that my home is still and dark — somehow inviting. I get to work on things that require my complete attention.
It’s when I read. This week, I’ve got a number of fabulous links to share with you from around the web — links I believe will make for great nighttime or weekend reading. I hope you find them just as valuable, thought-provoking, and entertaining as I did!
Food – Not Nutrients – Is The Fundamental Unit In Nutrition
We need to shift our focus away from “nutrients” and towards “food” in order to understand the effects nutrition has on health. Why? Because whole foods are so much more complex than nutritional science can understand.
Focusing too narrowly on nutrients has obscured the true value of eating Real Food.
An Interview With Nina Planck
Nina Planck wrote the book on Real Food. Literally. Many people read Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma (a FoodRenegade Must Read) and wondered: now what?
They still didn’t know what to eat. They only knew that they wanted to opt out of the industrialized food system in favor of something more sustainable, ethical, and nutritious. Nina Planck’s book Real Food: What to Eat and Why answered those questions.
Weekly Meal Plan
I enjoy curling up in my favorite living room chair, perusing old cookbooks and magazines for recipes to try or adapt. It’s a sort of Saturday evening ritual that I’ve missed the last couple of weeks.
Instead I’ve been planning menus on the fly, sitting right in front of my computer. It’s not that bad, really. It’s just that I feel a lot less creative this way.
