Meet Will Allen, a 60 year old giant in urban farming. Allen runs an inner city farm in the heart of Milwaukee, creating an oasis in the middle of a food desert.
He calls his program “Growing Power,” and it’s huge. On a mere two acres of land surrounded by housing projects and fast food joints, Will Allen grows a quarter of a million dollars worth of food, feeding more than 10,000 urbanites.
In a world where convenience is king, it takes a lot of determination to quit eating fast food. Even I sometimes find myself pulling out of the drive thru with a bag full of fake food and wondering just why I parted with my hard earned money so easily.
I try with all my might to not feel guilty about it. After all, we all need to make compromises from time to time. As long as eating fast food isn’t habitual, then the occasional meal doesn’t really harm anything. As long as my habits and tastes are shaped by finding, preparing, and eating Real Food, then the few fake food meals I eat are rare exceptions and my body ought to be able to cope.
But I still feel guilty.

If you’re at all like me or my kids, you love anything with bacon, eggs, and avocado in it. In our home, at least one meal a day is a giant salad.
My salad tastes are fairly broad, my rules simple. Put down a bed of greens, toss in whatever seasonal fruits & vegetables you’ve got at hand, add some nuts or seeds, and put a palm-sized portion of protein/fats in the middle of it all. That can be leftover salmon, tuna salad, chicken salad, leftover stew meat, sliced steaks, egg salad, you name it.
The key is variety. So, here’s a salad to inspire you.

The wonders never cease! In a record-breaking year of food recalls, it turns out some food corporations aren’t willing to sacrifice all that lost cash and swallow the tab. How do they make the economic blow of losing tons of food (literally) more tolerable?
They’ve been repackaging and redistributing recalled foods.
If you live in or around the Austin area, now’s your chance to see Food, Inc. It’s playing at the Alamo Ritz and Arbor Great Hills theaters. Friday afternoon my mom drove into town, and I announced, “We’re going on a hot date.”
Of course, I took her to see Food, Inc. I’m not sure how “hot” the date was — other than the 105 degree heat that persisted right up until showtime. After the movie, we dropped by Kerbey Lane for coffee and a delicious key lime cheesecake. (Rare indulgences like this are worth it when you’re out on a once-a-decade, exclusively mother-daughter date.) Our patio seating was pleasant compared to earlier in the day, but still a humid 90 plus degrees.
Being a blogger who is also a passionate advocate for Real Food, I’ve heard and read a lot about the film. Needless to say, I was mildly excited.

Real Food is old and traditional. It’s sustainably grown, organic, and local. And it nourishes the soul as well as the body.
That’s because finding, cooking, and eating Real Food is a craft. I once heard that cooking was the only art form that uses all five senses. It engages the whole person, and as such rewards the whole person. Preparing Real Food isn’t just about good nutrition or ethics. It’s about becoming the people we are meant to be, becoming more fully human.
