According to a Mother Earth News story, “Supermarket beef is an unnatural, industrial product. The good news is there are better and safer options.” Okay, so if you shouldn’t eat industrialized meat, what should you do?
Hemp Oil & Hemp Seeds — Are they safe?
A couple of weeks ago, Nutiva discovered this site. A few days later, an unexpected box of Nutiva’s food arrived in my mail. I was most excited about the free coconut oil. The rest of the box contained a food I’d never eaten before — hemp. Hemp oil. Hemp seeds. Hemp protein powder. Hemp seed snack bars.
Naturally I wondered, is this food safe?
GIVEAWAY: Chaffin Family Orchards Olive Oil $59 Value
Sometimes, I wish I lived in California. I’d get plenty of sunshine, year-round farmer’s markets, and the chance to meet farmers like Chris Kerston of Chaffin Family Orchards. Chaffin Family Orchards is a five generation family farm located in the Sacramento Valley in California. The founder, Del Chaffin, bought the farm just after his graduation from UC Berkeley in the early 1900’s. He wanted a location that could grow fruit 365 days a year. He found that and more. The farm has been harvesting and producing olives and olive oil for over 75 years. For over 50 years the farm has produced beef cattle, citrus, stone fruits, and avocados. The farm has raised sheep and poultry for over 20 years and the meat goats were begun in 2006.
In other words, these guys know how to do it right. And this week, they’re giving away 6 bottles of olive oil to one of my lucky readers!
Fat Is Where It’s At
For decades, the USDA food pyramid has been telling us to eat less fat. When they launched their campaign, only 14% of Americans were obese. Today, that number’s at more than 30%, with another 30% of the population being classified as “overweight.”
So what’s wrong? Did the public fail to get the message? Are we all secretly pigging out on high fat foods? Did we all suddenly turn sedentary?
By the late 1990s, more than 90% of American consumers reported eating low-fat products, and roughly two-thirds of us believed “a need exists for food ingredients that can replace the fat in food products.” By all appearances, we embraced the low-fat message with open arms. Yet we still gained weight.
Truth And Lies About Fats And Obesity With Gary Taubes
Gary Taubes isn’t a household name (unless you’re a big reader of Science or The New York Times Magazine). But this scientific journalist has done as much for the cause of understanding obesity and fats as the food journalist Michael Pollan has done for understanding our food and where it comes from.
If you want to understand the obesity epidemic, if you want to know why you or a loved one is overweight, if you want to know the truth about healthy fats and what they are, if you want to know the true cause of coronary heart disease, Gary Taubes has the answer.
The Cholesterol Myth
In my latest video, I talked about the Lipid Hypothesis — the theory that there is a direct correlation between the levels of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet with incidence of heart disease. Today, I’d like you to hear from a man who absolutely rips the Lipid Hypothesis to shreds.
Good Fat, Bad Fat — A Video Tutorial
When I tell people about my diet, they smile and nod through just about every detail. Oh, you make your own condiments? Great. You cook everything from scratch? Great. You source local, organic vegetables and meats? Great. When I tell them I cook with animal fats — lots of animal fats — I lose them….
Eat Fat to Lose Fat: A Real-Life Example
I’ve said it before. Fat isn’t bad for you. It’s not the quantity of fat you eat, but the kinds of fats that matter. In short: Vegetable oils = BAD Animal fats = GOOD (Go read this post on the subject if you’re fuzzy on why this is so.) Mark Sisson, of Mark’s Daily Apple,…
Healthy Fats: Is There Such A Thing?
Food Renegade Newbie Tip #2 Start Eating Healthy Fats. They’re not what you might think they are. If you’ve become a Label Nazi, you’ve probably noticed the perniciously pervasive oils that saturate the Standard American Diet (SAD) — corn & soybean oils. These oils — along with most vegetable oils — are primarily polyunsaturated fats…
Enzyme-rich Mayonnaise
Making your own condiments is an easy way to eat healthy fats, increase your enzyme intake, and reduce costs. Why pay $4 for a salad dressing you can make for less than $1? A key base of many creamy salad dressings (and yummy grilled cheese sandwiches!) is mayonnaise. I tried the recipe in Nourishing Traditions…
