Navigating the world of grocery stores, natural foods stores, co-ops, farmers markets, and farm stands can be intimidating. With all the variety and competing health claims, how in the world can you pick the healthiest foods?
You may have noticed that I’ve been systematically trying to answer those questions for you over the past four months. Each month I’ve featured a post on a particular food group and detailed how you should prioritize your food choices based on what’s available to you. So far, I’ve written on choosing the healthiest eggs, milk, cheese, and meats.
I’ll keep adding to the series. But in the meantime, I’d thought I’d create an index of the Healthy Foods: What to Buy series so that you can easily refer back to all the posts as I keep adding them.
If you have a topic you’re dying to know my take on, please feel free to ask me in the comments to this post. I’ll be happy to do the research, write a post, and add the post to this series.
And, now, I present the ever growing list of Healthy Foods: What to Buy:
- Healthy Eggs: What To Buy
- Healthy Milk: What To Buy
- Healthy Cheese: What To Buy
- Healthy Meats: What To Buy
- Healthy Seafood: What To Buy
- Where to Buy Butter from Grass-fed Cows
Hope you enjoy, and have a great Labor Day weekend!

Your blog has been such a help to me as I am reading Nourishing Traditions and The Maker’s Diet and becoming an advocate for Slow Food. I love being able to have a “real” food perspective! I just updated my blog with your food renegade photo and I have it linked back to the “basics” page of your blog… Thank you for all you do, and if you get a chance – be sure to visit my blog.

Since I am finding Real Cheese to be particularly difficult to find here in Alaska, I’ve decided to start making my own raw milk cheeses. I am looking forward to the challenge!

Thank you for compiling the list for this real food newbie. 🙂 I look forward to your post on seafood. I’m embracing the lifestyle change but it can be very overwhelming! And extremely difficult to find these foods. The next step I’m taking is returning to making all my family’s bread but I’ve never soaked the flour before so could use some recipes or tips on converting my recipes. (no allergies or sensitivities here) What are the healthiest breads?

This is a really fantastic reference — and it’s a good primer to re-read when my immediate desires (cheap pork chops!) outweigh my consience. Thank you so much!

I just wanted to thank you for this thread. I’m a huge health freak, and I always have trouble picking out the exact right groceries I need. It’s hard to know these days, too, with all the chemicals, additives, and everything.
Again, thanks–you’re a fantastic source of info for healthy eaters.

It is so difficult to know what’s healthy and what’s not. The super markets don’t make it any easier. Misleading packaging is a whole other story. Keep spreading the news.

Great list – it does get confusing shopping these days. Another great topic would be healthy oils – there are so many different kinds and it isn’t easy for the non natural health guru to keep all the different Omega’s straight. (I just heard about Omega-9! yikes not another fatty acid to learn about)

Regarding sea food, the best places are always the ones closest to source. So head to the docks, harbours or river towns to find the freshest seafood.

Hi thank your firslty for your post I have read a ton about how to heal cavity’s and how the main way is to stay away from bad foods and eat nutritious foods . However I just have one questioni: I’m currently simultaneously on a weight loss journey and have come to the conclusion that it’s probably the best to do some form of intermittent fasting ( like alternative day fasting ) or even the 5:2 if alternate day is too extreme but I’m worried about the effect it will have on my teeth it could either be beneficial ( eg giving my teeth a break from constantly chewing and help stop bacteria forming ) or it could be bad ( do to the lack of nutrition through the day ( even though I would make it up at night ( eg a days worth of food ) . Thank you for reading any advice or help will be greatly appreciated i love reading tryout posts on health and nutrition
