Navigating store-bought gluten-free baked goods can be like walking through a minefield. On the one hand, the cracker or cookie or pastry is wheat-free. SCORE. On the other hand, it’s almost always full of genetically-modified sugar and isolated starches that aren’t part of a traditional diet. FAIL. Recently a reader emailed me asking me to decode the label on her Glutino Gluten-Free Toaster Pastries Strawberry Flavor. This is what I found.

Chai Ice Cream Recipe
Autumn came with a vengeance where I live this weekend – while I write this I’m wrapped up in wool blankets and sipping honey caramel apple cider – so perhaps it’s odd that I’m writing an ice cream recipe to share. However, this recipe, with rich, warm Chai spices and the nourishment of raw egg yolks from pastured hens, raw cream, and raw milk, IS most definitely a treat for every time of year — winter and summer alike. Decadence from simple, down home ingredients — now that’s worth celebrating!
State Backs Down After Threatening to Take Baby Over Homemade Formula Dispute
Nothing strikes more fear into the heart of a loving parent than the idea of having their children taken away. Yet that’s just what the state of Maine threatened to do recently to young mother Alorah Gellerson when she told her doctor that she was feeding her baby a homemade formula made from raw goat’s milk.

3 Ways to Practice Radical Kindness When Dining Out
“You can never be too kind, too gentle.” I cling to these words like a prayer. They were first spoken by St. Seraphim of Sarov, and they’ve never failed to humble me. First let me dispel a common misconception. Kindness is not niceness; it is not being polite. Rather, it is a radical generosity of spirit that doesn’t condemn, but seeks instead to know and be known. With that in mind, I’ve become increasingly aware that the way to transform the world is through kindness. Likewise, the way to transform the food system is through kindness as well. What do I mean by that? How do I practice radical kindness? While the practice of kindness should permeate all facets of our lives, today I am sharing three examples of how I practice radical kindness while dining out.
Roasted Acorn Squash
Fall is completely in the air – the air is crisp, the leaves are turning, and a freshness whips in with the wind. Along with the chilly weather and beautiful array of colors, Fall also brings flavors all its own! It seems that cinnamon, spices, and squash are forefront on the menu this time of year.
That is why I wanted to share with you one of my favorite, and incredibly easy, recipes for Roasted Acorn Squash. It’s sweet, spicy, and buttery-rich (and not-to-mention “husband-approved!”). With a little bit of roasting time and a few simple ingredients – you will have a mouthwatering side dish to bring Fall to life in your kitchen!

BOOK LOVE: Sustainability Starts at Home
Every so often, a book comes along that is so practical, you can’t help but immediately using its tips to make changes to your life. The new e-book Sustainability Starts at Home: How to Save Money While Saving the Planet by fellow VGN blogger Dawn Gifford is like that. Within moments of finishing the book, I walked around the house and easily implemented a handful of changes that will save me hundreds of dollars each year! I found this book so completely useful, that I decided right then and there that nothing would make me happier than making sure that each and every one of you could get your hands on a copy. So, I asked Dawn if she would give you guys a coupon to use to make the book super affordable, and she did! But first, my review!

USDA Guts Organic Standards
Last week the USDA announced a change in the organic ingredients “sunset” policy — without any kind of public review. You see, before last week, if a company wanted to include a non-organic (synthetic) ingredient in certified organic foods, the ingredient had to apply for an exemption which would expire after five years unless it was re-exempted by a decisive, two-thirds majority vote of the National Organic Standards Board. That is no longer the case.
