It would be nice if more people woke up and realized that legal does not mean lawful. That's the crux of everything that is wrong with "government" and why all the kicking and screaming on every little thing does not work. As Robert Menard says, you need to find remedy.

I purchase 4 gallons of fresh raw milk each Sunday morning from a small farmer in Dartmouth, MA. We have never been sick from drunking this milk. In August my 8 yo daughter broke her arm. She guzzled the milk like it was going out of style. Already at her young age she understands that there is more Vit D in raw milk than in conventional milk. Her borken arm was more severe than most and she had to unfortuanately had to have it x-ray'd on an almost weekly basis and have casted it and recasted. Her orthopedic surgeon could not believe the weekly changes in her bone growth and how rapidly healing was taking place. Coicedence? We do not think so. The CLA found in Raw Milk is far superior than the chemically Vit D infused milk you will buy at the stores. Hands down we know what we are doing is better. Better for our daughter. Better for the cows. Better for the farmer in Dartmouth, MA. It is a no brainer.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons why we don't want the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). (http://NoNAIS.org)

The USDA says they want NAIS so they can trace diseases back to the farm. The problem is almost all food safety issues start at the processor, long after the animal left the farm and even after any NAIS tags have been removed. NAIS will make scape goats out of farmers for problems caused by processors.

The government should not be in the business of getting between people. It should protect our borders and big projects like war. Not Big Brother.

What a great post! I am a big fan of raw milk and feel like raw anything is safer and healthier in the long run than pasteurized. Jill's article was refreshing and very informative!

I think her point was that everything is risky, but somethings (like feeding kids fast food or smoking around them) are actually PROVEN to harm health. So, if we don't have laws against the things which are TRULY dangerous, why do we have laws against things that are relatively low-risk?

I did not quite like the way that the reviewer lumped parents giving raw milk to their children with feeding them fast food and smoking around them.

I would eat off my farmer's dairy floor. I really really would.

I read this post with interest. I am not a milk drinker per se but my children seem to like it so I buy it for them, usually from Horizon. I do remember being a young girl and going to get milk with my grandfather from the farmers up the street from where we lived, bringing it back home, boiling it and then drinking it. I never met anyone that got sick from drinking milk this way and I don't know what the big hoopla is here in the US. It seems that everything in every sector becomes complicated at one point or another here. It seems that the regulatory agencies are often completely incompetent too. My family has first hand experiences with Health regulatory 'experts' and I can tell you that when they don't 'like' you (yes, it is that random) you are basically screwed. They can be a fetid lot, using their bureaucratic powers as whimsically as 5 year olds. Why? Because they can. I have empathy for the farmers that sell their product and know their business but get hounded by regulators and agents. It's a mess and I hope that it can be worked out for the benefit of the farmers and the consumers.
