Nothing strikes more fear into the heart of a loving parent than the idea of having their children taken away. Yet that’s just what the state of Maine threatened to do recently to young mother Alorah Gellerson when she told her doctor that she was feeding her baby a homemade formula made from raw goat’s milk.
I Went To Wise Traditions 2011 And Got a T-Shirt
This past weekend I went to Dallas with husband and kids in tow for a whirlwind 4 days of eating glorious food, meeting long-time internet friends face-to-face, speaking on a panel, and taking fervent notes as I sat in educational talks. I sampled Bubonic Tonic, ate salmon roe, and piled a never-ending supply of raw, golden butter from grass-fed cows onto just about every bite of food I ate.
Will I See You In Dallas?
I admit it. I’m actually a bit nervous. I spend most of my time at home — homeschooling three little ones, working on the Food Renegade site and related projects, and housekeeping. It suits me because I’m an introvert. I enjoy writing, emailing, blogging. I enjoy being with my family. I guess I’m a homebody. I’m the sort of person that goes to hear Joel Salatin speak, but I don’t introduce myself despite the fact that we’ve shared email exchanges and he’s written guest posts for me before.
So, what’s an introvert like me doing going to the 2011 Wise Traditions Conference in Dallas, TX next month? Why am I subjecting myself to a crowd of like-minded people? Rubbing shoulders with folks like Sally Fallon Morell, Mark McAffee, Dr. Mercola, and others? What was I thinking when I agreed to get up in front of an audience and actually speak in public about my experience blogging?
I’ll tell you what I was thinking. I was thinking “Boo-Yah!”
Real Food Link Love
I hate this part of the Link Love post — the part where I try to summarize the post in a few handy sentences. Sometimes, it’s just downright impossible. I’ve tried different strategies over the years. Sometimes I’ve simply talked about my own week. Sometimes I’ve teased readers with a few of the post’s highlights. I’ll probably do all of those again. Today, I’m opting for full disclosure.
Summarizing this week’s Link Love post was hard, so hard I opted not to do it!
Artisan Cheese Under Attack
The FDA has declared that no one should consume raw dairy for any reason. So, it’s not surprising that they have come down hard on raw milk artisan cheese makers like Estrella Family Creamery in Washington state. In the interview below, radio host (and local Weston A. Price chapter leader) Shonagh Home interviews Kelli Estrella to get the inside story of the FDA’s heavy handedness.
