Making healthier meals doesn’t have to put you off cooking or shopping. All it takes is a small shift in how you approach food and a little understanding of how some foods work. From choosing better fats for your cooking to choosing simpler recipes, here are some handy ideas. Making Healthier Meals with Better Fats…
Real Plans Meal Planning Service: A Review
I’ve never been good at meal planning. It takes a certain kind of person — someone who’s far more organized than me. That’s why I need all the help I can get. Last month, my friend Emily Bartlett and her husband Antony rolled out a new meal planning app called Real Plans.
Hemp Oil & Hemp Seeds — Are they safe?
A couple of weeks ago, Nutiva discovered this site. A few days later, an unexpected box of Nutiva’s food arrived in my mail. I was most excited about the free coconut oil. The rest of the box contained a food I’d never eaten before — hemp. Hemp oil. Hemp seeds. Hemp protein powder. Hemp seed snack bars.
Naturally I wondered, is this food safe?
Which Famous Sustainable Foodie Should Be Your Love Slave? (In the kitchen!!)
You know you want to know! I’ve got a confession to make. I think it’s really sexy when my husband does the dishes. I also get excited when I find someone who’s as passionately devoted to Real Food as I am. I also like to have fun. That’s why I created this quiz.
Soylent Food Substitute Reaches $1M in Pre-Orders
Have you heard of the not-so-cleverly named food substitute that’s about to break into the American market? It’s called Soylent. Soylent’s creator, Rob Rhinehart, wanted to create an inexpensive food replacement (not “meal” replacement) that could help end world hunger and allow techies to stay glued to their computers without the need to take pesky breaks for eating. Last month, Soylent successfully raised more than a million dollars through pre-orders in one of the world’s most popular crowd funding campaigns to date.
Michael Pollan On The Daily Show
Michael Pollan interviewed by Jon Stewart. How can that be anything but perfectly entertaining?
Pollan is promoting his newest book. Yes, you loved him for The Omnivore’s Dilemma. And you probably enjoyed In Defense of Food. His newest book is more like a pamphlet. It’s called Food Rules, and is on sale at Amazon for mere $5.50. The new book contains 64 food rules which Pollan collected from people around the world. The few I’ve read are simple, funny, and fairly well on-target. I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest to see whether they’re all as good.
The segment began with Jon Stewart asking a straightforward question: Name one over-arching rule that summarizes the book.
Lessons On Real Food From 100 Years Ago
I’m looking at a book. It’s the kind of book you’d pick up in an antique store, take home, and treasure — not just because of it’s yellowed pages and delicate binding, but because of it’s utterly fascinating content. It’s called Graded Lessons in Physiology and Hygiene, and it’s a textbook used in the Texas schools in 1908.
I’ve been thumbing through the book for weeks, marveling at just how much common sense knowledge we’ve lost when it comes to food and health. Before people began putting their trust in the government, diet dictocrats, and food manufacturers to tell them what to eat, they actually experienced an acute connection with their food that enabled them to make wise judgments about what is and is not healthful based merely on accumulated personal observations.
